PRP for Hair Loss

Having a good hair day is something that both males and females would like to have every day, but if you have started to experience hair thinning, then you may be waiting to see the day when you will have a good hair day. Here at Bloom Hair Transplant Clinic in Mumbai, Dr. Vinod Sonawane believes that there is no better time than now to look and feel like your best self which is why he recommends platelet-rich plasma or PRP for hair loss. To help you learn more about this procedure, we have created a list answering some frequently asked questions.

WHAT IS PRP?

You may have heard about PRP being used in facials like the vampire facial, but this platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can also be used to help treat hair loss. PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma for hair regrowth is a non-surgical, autologous treatment derived from the patient’s own blood. The plasma in your blood is rich in all sorts of unique proteins which help to stimulate stem cell growth which can help with a wide array of things such as collagen growth and, yes you guessed it, even hair growth.

HOW IS PRP PERFORMED?

After the concerned area is identified, evaluated and measured, standardized medical photos are taken in the photo suite. Special gentle and sterile techniques and equipment are used to separate, concentrate the platelets and plasma from a small sample of peripheral blood. A sample of the blood and PRP is tested in a hematology analyzer to measure and document the improved platelet concentration. The scalp is prepared with antiseptic solution and anesthetic (not simply local anesthetic gel) is used to completely numb the scalp for a 100% painless procedure. Small injections of the PRP deliver the powerful platelet-derived growth factors into the skin at the level of the weak follicles. Electronic, mechanical micro-needling is performed.

IS IT PAINFUL?

As previously mentioned, we use a combination of antiseptic solution and anesthetic to ensure that you remain as comfortable as possible. Though pain tolerance of each individual varies, it is mostly a non-painful process.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE for PRP?

Ideal candidates for PRP for hair loss are the ones at the beginning stages of thinning hair with at least partially active hair follicles. Patients with more advanced hair loss or inactive follicles are still considered to be good candidates for PRP, but they may require more treatments. Additionally, PRP is also used to treat patients suffering from alopecia areata.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS IN PRP?

PRP is a safe treatment option with no risk of allergic reaction because it is your own blood. Risks involved are those related to obtaining your blood for PRP preparation. Infection at the blood draw site, bleeding, nerve damage, and air entry into the vein are very rare, especially in the hands of your aesthetician.

Please let your doctor know if you have any medical problems related to your blood, including a history of easy bleeding, low platelets or any infections.

If you are unsure of the risks of your specific condition, we request you to consult your current physician to gather more information and learn about any potential adverse issues with PRP treatment.
